Founded in 1979, by its founder José Cardoso, J. Cardoso, Lda’s corporate purpose was to operate in the hotel industry.
In November 1983, Cardoso Group opened its first hotel unit, Hotel Alto Lido, made up of 118 rooms.

In March 2004, Cardoso Group acquired the company Ponte e Silva Lda., owner of Ajuda Madeira Hotel, a unit with 91 rooms, located relatively close to the hotel units already owned by J. Cardoso, Lda., which made possible to take advantage of the synergies between all hotel units.
On July 27, 2009, the Group brand "Cardoso Madeira Hotels" was launched.
In August 2009, the company changed its corporate name to J. Cardoso, S.A.
In 2009, 118 rooms of Hotel Alto Lido were refurbished.
On March 1, 2016, Hotel Baía Azul reopened after a complete renovation.
